184 - Oracle identifiers

SID (System Identifier) :

A SID (almost) uniquely identifies an instance. Actually, $ORACLE_HOME, $ORACLE_SID and
$HOSTNAME identify an instance uniquely.

Global database name :

A database is uniquely identified by a global database name.
Usually, the global database name must be consisting of db_domain and db_name.

Database Name :

183 - Port Range in Linux

There is a port range rule in Linux. Most of port number is registered in /etc/service.
Even though you register it in /etc/service, no restriction agaist other programs and applications.

0 - 1023 : Well Known Ports
1024 - 49151 : Registered Ports
49152 - 65535 : Private service, Physical port

* Check the local port range.

182 - Oracle exp bash: syntax error near unexpected token

When you excute the following Oracle Export command under Linux bash.

# exp user_id/password file=./tables.dmp tables=(table_a,table_b,table_c,table_d)

You could get the error :

bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('

Correct syntax is :


181 - To show top10 CPU & Memory utilization

  • Top 10 CPU utilization
# ps -e aux | sort -r -k 3 | head -n 10
  • Top 10 Memory utilization
# ps -e aux | sort -r -k 4 | head -n 10

If you do not need a header, please add the following option.

ps --no-header



180 - Cancel a concurrent request in Oracle Apps

If you can not cancel a concurrent request in Oracle Apps Forms interface, you could use the following SQL to cancel the request.

* To check the request information.

SQL> select status_code, phase_code from fnd_concurrent_requests where request_id = <request ID>;

* Update the status.


179 - pfile vs sfile in Oracle

  • pfile

Specify the name of the text parameter file you want to create. If you do not specify pfile_name, Oracle Database uses the platform-specific
default initialization parameter file name.

  • sfile

Specify the name of the binary server parameter from which you want to create a text file. If you specify spfile_name, then the file must exist on
the server. If the file does not reside in the default directory for server parameter files on your operating system, then you must specify the full path.

178 - zip, tar compress utilities

1. zip

Zip is probably the most commonly used archiving format out there today. Its biggest advantage is the fact that it is available on all operating system
platforms such as Linux, Windows, and Mac OS, and generally supported out of the box. The downside of the zip format is that it does not offer
the best level of compression. Tar.gz and tar.bz2 are far superior in that respect. Let’s move on to usage now.

To compress a directory with zip do the following :


177 - ERROR 1045 (28000) MySQL

If you got the following error, you need to reset the password.

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)


176 - CUPS printer ErrorPolicy

The ErrorPolicy directive defines the policy that is used when a backend is unable to send a print job to the printer. The lpadmin(8) command
sets the current error policy.

1. Modify the configuration file directly :

# vi /etc/cups/printers.conf

<Printer name>
  ErrorPolicy abort-job

175 - VMWARE ESX : ssh, Web Access

If you want enable ssh & web access in terms of VMWARE ESX, you need to configure the following.

1. To enable ssh access for root :

# vi /etc/ssh/sshd_congif


PermitRootLogin yes


2. To enable VMWARE Web Access :

The service name is 'vmware-webAccess in Linux.
